The Black Sea region of Turkey accounts for approximately 70% of the world’s hazelnut production, with an average crop yield of 350Kmt of kernels. The second-largest producer, Italy, produces an average of 50Kmt. The majority of hazelnut farms in Turkey are family-owned and are usually spread across a few hectares. On a well-maintained hectare, farmers can expect a yield of around 500kg of in-shell material. These farmers have the advantage of not depending solely on income generated by hazelnuts and can withhold their supplies from the market until prices become favorable, as seen in the 2014 and 2016 crops.
Hazelnuts are a popular ingredient in the confectionery industry, with many products, such as pralines, Nutella, and Frangelico liqueur, incorporating them into their recipes. Hazelnuts are a rich source of protein, monounsaturated fats, vitamin E, and various other essential nutrients. Due to their nutritional benefits, hazelnuts have also become increasingly popular in the health food industry.
